Local children voice breastfeeding animations
Pupils from The Parks Academy and St Richards Voluntary Catholic Academy Primary Schools, have played a key role in a series of educational animations.
The short films feature quirky cartoon beings talking about breastfeeding. There are four in total, each with a different theme, including how dads and other family members can feel part of breastfeeding, and why breastmilk is good for babies.
Co-produced with our Public Health Team, as well as partners in Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, the animations will be used as an educational tool across the city. They will be shown on -
- screens in GP surgeries
- screens in PHSE lessons for primary pupils
- the Family Hubs website
- our social media channels
To create the new videos, a team visited local schools in areas where breastfeeding rates are particularly low. They talked to children about breastfeeding, then asked them a series of questions and captured their adorable answers.
Cllr Linda Chambers, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Hull City Council, said:
“Starting with children is a fantastic way to normalise and encourage breastfeeding. Talking to children about breastfeeding helps them to understand the benefits and see it as normal from the start. We also know that parents will listen to their children on topics like behaviour change. So there’s real potential for adults to learn from little ones!
“The animations only take a few moments to watch, but they’re full of valuable information. We think hearing local children talking about breastfeeding in their own words will be really impactful for everyone who watches them.
“Hopefully the way these videos will be used will play a really important role in creating a generation of children who see breastfeeding as the norm, and don’t experience the worries or stigma that may have affected their parents and grandparents”.
The new animations are the latest piece of work to promote and normalise breastfeeding in Hull. The city’s Milk Trail, which launched last year, is a map of 9 breastfeeding-friendly venues where visitors can learn about breastfeeding and take part in a quiz.
The family-friendly trail is a great way to explore the city centre and free to take part in – as are almost all the participating venues. The 9 places which make up the trail are part of a wider network of 120 Breastfeeding Friendly venues throughout the city.
